In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, a multitude of AI applications and providers have emerged, echoing the early days of the internet with an array of search engines. This article delves into prominent names like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude, offering diverse solutions to meet the growing demand for AI services.

Introduction

As artificial intelligence continues to grow in its importance and applicability to daily life, various AI applications and providers are being created, similar to the early days of the internet with multiple search engines. While some names are well known, other notable options provide similar services, reflecting the strong demand for these applications from prominent names such as Google and Microsoft to independent AI agencies such as Claude and OpenAI.

ChatGPT – Open AI

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and development company founded in San Francisco in 2015 by Ilya Sutskever, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Greg Brockman. The mission of OpenAI is to develop artificial intelligence and artificial general intelligence that benefit all of humanity. While known for its language learning model, LLM, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence that processes natural language to generate human-like responses, it has also developed the image generator DALL-E and offerings from OpenAI. OpenAI offers the ability for an individual to develop their own GPT style bots as well as APIs – Application Program Interface.

Bard/Gemini – Google

Google Bard is a chatbot developed by Google in 2023 that served as a direct response to the success witnessed by the strong response and acceptance of ChatGPT. Bard is a fellow LLM and has capabilities similar to other chatbots, such as ChatGPT. It can generate writing and assist with generating code and mathematical problems. Unlike ChatGPT, Google utilizes its proprietary LLMs, LaMDA and PaLM 2; LaMDA was an LLM developed in 2021 but was not released to the public. Google is planning to elevate its product offerings in 2024, starting with the first multi-modal AI Gemini. Gemini is capable of processing text, code, video, and images and will also be available in three modes: Ultra, Pro, and Nano. Ultra works off of a larger architecture, making it suitable for large-scale applications. In contrast, Pro is a smaller model suitable for personal daily users, and Nano models will be optimized to work on mobile devices.

Copilot – Microsoft

In February 2023, Microsoft announced that it was going to undertake a significant overhaul to its search engine Bing, which would launch the chatbot feature Bing Chat. Within 48 hours, over one million individuals would register on the waiting list in order to be granted access. Copilot is in the early stages of rolling out, being announced in September 2023, and will incorporate a unique feature. While Microsoft did build its own model for Copilot, known as Prometheus,  it was created using ChatGPT-4 as the foundational language model. Currently, it is limited to Microsoft 365 Enterprise customers – those anticipating purchasing 300 or more licenses, and it is unknown when it will become available to average Microsoft users; however, it will be integrated into Windows 11.

Grok – Twitter/X

X, also known as Twitter, has entered the AI industry and released its own chatbot, Grok. Grok was developed by X.AI.Corp, a company that was founded by a previous OpenAI board of directors and the current owner of Twitter, Elon Musk. Grok was developed as an LLM but will be built on a proprietary dataset to provide a chatbot that is capable of advanced mathematical reasoning and adhering to the xAI goal of understanding the true nature of the universe. Grok was only recently released in November 2023 and is integrated with X. Currently, it is in Beta mode but will later be available to those with X Premium+ subscribers. One unique feature of Grok, and applicable to it being integrated into a social media platform, is having different personas in the way that it answers the user, having a regular mode to generate responses similar to standard chatboxes, but also a “fun mode” where it will respond informally even taking on questions that other chatbots, notably ChatGPT, have been programmed to refuse to answer.

Claude – Anthropic

Claude is a ChatGPT rival developed by Anthropic and former OpenAI leaders Daniela and Dario Amodei. Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that builds reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. In August 2023, Claude was updated to its second version, which has a few unique capabilities that most other AI chatbots do not possess. One limitation of various chatbots is the amount of text that can be sent in any prompt. Claude, however, can process upwards of 75,000 words at once. Additionally, it is one of the few with access to real-time data, whereas other bots are limited to the information provided before its most recent update. For example, ChatGPT’s memory can only access data until January 2022. Claude can also be integrated into Slack.

Conclusion

In the ever-growing field of artificial intelligence, various AI applications and providers are emerging and establishing themselves, similar to the early days of the internet, with big and small names entering the field, providing unique solutions while catering to the surging demand for AI services. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT is one prominent industry example, Google and Bard leverage DeepMind’s proprietary LLMs to advance the capabilities of AI even further with the first multimodal model, Gemini. Microsoft’s Copilot, crafted from a base of ChatGPT-4, will showcase unique features such as direct integration into Windows 11 for those who rely upon Windows services. Meanwhile, Claude offers impressive features for lengthy word processing and real-time data access. While these AI companies compete for market dominance, users can anticipate a vibrant landscape of alternatives or learning various models to assist in driving innovation and improving these models for future use.
